Longhouse Trading is a privately owned
company established in 1999. It is located in the Central Vancouver Island area
working in the value added forestry industry. We purchase raw logs from only
Vancouver Island small and medium harvesting sites including BC Woodlots.
As a fully integrated forestry
operation, Longhouse Trading markets directly to the Building Project
eliminating the need for a middleman. This significantly saves costs to our
customers. The quality of our products has been
established in the way Longhouse Trading purchases logs.
Projects Longhouse Trading has supplied
products for include Nisga'a Government Building New Aiyansh in northern B.C.,
Brentwood Bay Lodge in Brentwood Bay, B.C. and the Wickanninish Inn in Tofino,
B.C.
Longhouse Trading has supplied products
to projects in Northern Alaska, Japan, Hawaii and even Puerto Rico. These
projects range from multi-million dollar homes on the Sea-to-Sky corridor
between Vancouver and Whistler Mountain Ski Resort to being a supplier for the
$19 million Longhouse project for the Qay'llnagaay Heritage Society in Skidigate,
Queen Charlotte Islands B.C.
We have our own sawmill, and we kiln dry or air dry
our wood on site. Longhouse Trading Company also has a 15, 000 square foot
pre-staining plant and new state of the art pre-staining machinery to
ensure quality control in our application of stains and preservative
applications. We manufacture sidings, fir flooring, posts and beams, board and batten,
decking, poles and custom cuts such as Hydro Douglas Fir Crossarms.
|
The raw material for these products
starts out at a six acre site near Qualicum Beach B.C., where logs are
bucked, sorted and stored. On this site is the core of our
manufacturing operations, a Heartwood model 310 band saw, with
supporting edgers and chop saws. The saw features computerized set
works, with a thin-kerf double-cut blade.

"We find with these horizontal type of bandmills that we
get a lot better quality cut and a lot more out of the log than with
other types of sawmills." Brian Jenkins
Longhouse Trading Company cuts
everything to order so manufacturing is well planned before a log even
comes near a saw blade. All orders go to the mill operations manager
Tom Yates, who manages how and when the wood will be cut guaranteeing
absolute quality customer satisfaction.
Considering the nature of this specialized work, price sensitivity is not an issue for our customers.

We also produce utility pole cross arms for
Hydro companies across North America.
These four by five inch pieces sit at
the top of utility poles and hold conductors and other related
equipment. These utility pole cross arms must be pre-drilled to
exacting tolerances - within a 1/16th of an inch- which Longhouse
Trading completes to perfection with a
13 head boring machine.

Longhouse Trading Company is
in the process of negotiating a deal to supply a small portion of the
cross arms that will be required as part of the massive infrastructure
rebuild after the damage caused by Hurricane Katrina.

 |
Another of our company's strengths is
that we deal directly with building contractors or homeowners
eliminating the middle-man. Longhouse Trading has a fleet of four
five-ton trucks, all equipped with Hiab cranes to transport product.
"This is important" says Brian Jenkins, founder, "Our commitment is to deliver to our customers on time." |
Longhouse Trading Company has worked to establish excellent relationships with the local forest companies.

Longhouse Trading Company support and
encourages sound forest practices and effective management of the forest
resource for future generations to enjoy. We purchase logs from woodlots
because of their sustainable approach, and also belong to the South Island
Woodlot Association which is committed to environmental logging practices.
All timber is harvested on a 80 year
harvest rotation ensuring future generations will be in business.

Purchasing timber from sustainable woodlots is an investment for the future!
We are also moving towards using water based paints and products instead of solvent based in our lumber treating facility. |
